Underwriting Support Assistant

Job Description:

Commercial real estate underwriters are responsible for determining the risk associated with lending for commercial property transactions. This role supports UMB relationship managers in the assessment and underwriting of new SBCRE managed investment loans while adhering to established underwriting policies and procedures.

Allocating Your Time Wisely and Productively:

• Partner with UMB relationship managers to perform credit underwriting duties for existing and prospective client relationships.
• Conduct detailed credit evaluations to assess the repayment capacity of borrowers and guarantors.
• Provide appropriate loan structuring recommendations aligned with risk guidelines.
• Prepare and finalize credit packages for submission to the credit committee for approval consideration.
• Develop underwriting documentation by evaluating collateral across multiple asset classes and creating pricing and risk rating models tailored to each credit request.
• Present loan requests to the UMB senior loan committee on behalf of relationship managers and respond to questions related to loan analysis and approval.
• Review appraisals to confirm consistency between appraisal assumptions and underwriting conclusions and ensure all approval conditions are satisfied.
• Provide ongoing customer support to existing and prospective clients through joint sales meetings or direct communication, consistently upholding UMB TUCE standards.
• Complete and submit all required documentation and reports while resolving related issues in a timely and effective manner.
• Collaborate with internal partners across loan operations, credit analysis, regional commercial banking, business banking, special assets management, loan review, public finance, capital markets, and international banking to support loan decisions, closings, and ongoing portfolio management.
• Participate in various REG underwriting initiatives and special projects as opportunities arise.
• Provide guidance and support to less experienced REG underwriters and/or portfolio managers.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or a related field required
• More than five years of experience in commercial banking with a focus on credit analysis and underwriting
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• In-depth experience managing loan maturities, renewals, restructures, approval modifications, and new underwriting approaches
• Advanced knowledge of credit underwriting for major investment commercial real estate property types and a strong understanding of banking products, services, and operations
• Ability to interpret policies, procedures, loan documentation, credit reports, and financial statements
• Strong analytical skills, including evaluation of commercial real estate assets, markets, and guarantor financial statements
• Demonstrated initiative, self-motivation, and ability to mentor junior team members
• High proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and commercial lending applications
