Commercial Underwriter

Job Description:

As a Commercial Underwriter, you will be responsible for independently evaluating, preparing, and recommending credit decisions for commercial lending transactions. You will manage a portfolio of clients, assess risk, and ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory guidelines.

Responsibilities:

• Works independently with minimal oversight and exercises elevated approval authority.
• Prepares loan offerings for all types of transactions, regardless of complexity, or manages assigned portfolio.
• Interacts with internal and external customers and serves as a subject matter expert for specific asset classes.
• May represent or lead the department on special projects or assignments.
• Uses independent judgment to identify risks and mitigants; prepares loan offerings and/or scorecards by analyzing credit, collateral strength, and financial worthiness of loan/transaction parties.
• Performs ongoing credit risk management for assigned portfolio when applicable.
• Coaches and reviews the work of other underwriters and provides managerial support as needed.
• Contacts internal/external customers to gather information or clarify inconsistent, incorrect, or missing details.
• Performs pre-approval and post-approval activities, ensuring all internal policies and procedures are followed.
• Identifies and confirms all external regulatory requirements.
• Makes recommendations on credit decisions or approves credit decisions directly, as appropriate.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years of relevant or direct industry experience. Certifications are often desired.
• In lieu of a degree, a comparable combination of education, certifications, and experience (including military service) may be considered.
• Preferred skills include: credit decisions, financial analysis, identifying risks, process improvements, decision making, risk assessments, and results orientation.
• Competencies include: accuracy and attention to detail, coaching others, credit analysis and verification, decision-making and critical thinking, effective communications, knowledge of underwriting, managing multiple priorities, office support tools, and operational functions.
• No required certifications or licenses.
