Job Description: Mortgage Originator

Responsibilities of a Mortgage Originator include supporting clients with their loan applications and presenting them with information on different mortgage alternatives to consider. The Mortgage Originator is responsible for generating new mortgage business from internal and external leads. This role includes taking loan applications, reviewing applicant information, collecting required documents, and guiding customers through the loan process. The Originator sets clear expectations, provides updates, and ensures compliance with bank credit policies and guidelines (GSE, FHA, VA).

Fundamental Job Functions and Responsibilities:

• Create mortgage finance packages and drive business expansion through referrals, networking strategies, and collaborative efforts with partners such as banks, real estate agents, construction firms, and financial advisors.
• Build connections with assigned banking locations and train employees on recognizing and referring mortgage leads.
• Create revenue streams through a blend of self-initiated efforts and bank-recommended channels.
• Cultivate consistent communication with mortgage operations teams and management for optimal functioning.
• Demonstrate professionalism and uphold the security of customer details.
• Review customer financial information to recommend suitable mortgage products that are tailored to their individual needs.
• Administer the progression of the loan, managing it through every step from application to closing.
• Keep up-to-date on lending guidelines and make sure to comply with all policies.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This role does not include any supervisory tasks or managerial duties.

Qualifications:

• Education: A high school diploma is mandatory, with a higher level of education being desirable for this opportunity.
• Knowledge: Competence in mortgage lending policies, credit appraisal methodologies, and underwriting requisites is fundamental, with a compulsory NMLS certification.
• Experience: A minimum of 3–5 years of experience in mortgage banking required, with knowledge of FNMA/FHLMC, FHA, and VA programs.

Skills and Abilities:

• Proficient in building relationships and skilled in communication in various professional situations.
• Delving into financial analysis in conjunction with mastering interview techniques.
• Competency in using computer systems and tools essential for business tasks.

Physical Requirements:

• Regular dialogue and attentive reception.
• Repetitive activities requiring the use of hands and fingers.
• Capacity to assess documents and operate office machinery.
• A valid driver’s license is required for this outside sales role.
• Ability to stand, walk, sit for extended periods, and occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.

Mental Requirements:

• The ability to address issues and make sense of complex instructions.
• Competence in mathematical areas like interest computation, ratio interpretation, cash flow oversight, and debt repayment.
