Credit Underwriter

Job Description for Credit Underwriter:

Credit Underwriters play a crucial role in evaluating and approving or declining commercial property loan applications. This position supports UMB relationship managers in assessing and underwriting new SBCRE managed investment loans in compliance with established underwriting policies and guidelines.

Utilizing Your Time Efficiently and Productively:

• Partner with UMB relationship managers to perform credit underwriting duties for existing and prospective client relationships.
• Assess the credit risk of borrowers or guarantors by conducting detailed analyses of repayment capacity.
• Provide appropriate loan structuring recommendations based on credit risk evaluation.
• Develop and assemble credit packages for review and approval by the credit committee.
• Prepare underwriting documentation, including evaluation of collateral across multiple asset classes and creation of customized pricing and risk rating models.
• Submit loan applications to the UMB senior loan committee and respond to questions regarding loan assessment and approval.
• Review appraisals to ensure consistency with underwriting assumptions and compliance with approval requirements.
• Provide ongoing customer support to existing and potential clients, participating in joint sales calls or direct client communication, while maintaining UMB TUCE standards.
• Complete all required forms and reports and resolve related issues efficiently.
• Collaborate with internal teams including loan operations, credit analysis, regional commercial banking, business banking, special asset management, loan review, public finance, capital markets, and international banking to manage commercial loan decisions, closings, and ongoing loan administration.
• Participate in various REG underwriting projects as opportunities arise.
• Mentor and guide junior REG underwriters and/or portfolio managers.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or a related field required
• Over five years of experience in commercial banking, with a focus on credit assessment and underwriting
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency in managing maturing loans, renewing term loans, restructuring, approval processes, term modifications, and implementing new underwriting strategies
• Advanced knowledge of credit underwriting for major investment commercial real estate property types, including strong understanding of bank products, services, and operations
• Ability to interpret policies, procedures, loan agreements, credit reports, and financial statements
• Strong analytical skills for evaluating commercial real estate properties, markets, and guarantor financial statements
• Self-motivated, proactive, and capable of mentoring junior colleagues
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and commercial lending software
