Job Description:

One of the primary duties of a Commercial Real Estate Underwriter Associate is to ensure that loan requests meet the lender’s established guidelines and criteria. This role supports UMB relationship managers by evaluating and underwriting new SBCRE managed investment loans in accordance with approved underwriting policies and practices.

Strategies for Optimizing Time Management:

• Partner with UMB relationship managers to perform credit underwriting duties for existing and prospective client relationships.
• Conduct detailed financial analyses of borrowers and guarantors to assess repayment capacity.
• Provide appropriate loan structuring recommendations aligned with credit risk and policy standards.
• Prepare, organize, and submit complete credit packages for credit committee review and approval.
• Develop underwriting documentation by evaluating collateral across multiple asset classes and creating pricing and risk rating models tailored to each credit request.
• Present loan requests to the UMB senior loan committee on behalf of relationship managers and address questions related to loan evaluation and approval.
• Review appraisals to confirm consistency between appraisal assumptions and underwriting analysis, ensuring all approval conditions are met.
• Provide ongoing customer support to existing and prospective clients through joint sales visits with relationship managers or direct client communication, while consistently upholding UMB TUCE standards.
• Complete all required documentation and reports, resolving related issues in a timely and effective manner.
• Collaborate with internal partners including loan operations, credit analysis, regional commercial banking, business banking, special asset management, loan review, public finance, capital markets, and international banking to support loan decisions, closings, and ongoing portfolio management.
• Lead or participate in various REG underwriting projects as opportunities arise.
• Mentor and support less experienced REG underwriters and/or portfolio managers.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or a related field required
• More than five years of experience in commercial banking with a primary focus on credit underwriting
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrated experience managing loan maturities, renewals, restructures, approval modifications, and new underwriting initiatives
• Advanced knowledge of credit underwriting for key commercial real estate investment property types and strong understanding of banking products, services, and operations
• Ability to interpret policies, procedures, loan agreements, credit reports, financial statements, and loan documentation
• Strong analytical skills, including evaluation of commercial real estate assets, markets, and guarantor financial statements
• Proven initiative, self-motivation, and ability to share knowledge with junior team members
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and commercial lending software
