Job Description:

The Credit Underwriter evaluates commercial loan requests and determines the financial strength and repayment ability of borrowers. This role reviews financial records, credit history, cash flow, collateral, debt obligations, and industry conditions to assess lending risks. The Credit Underwriter prepares clear underwriting recommendations and helps ensure lending decisions follow established policies and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

• Review financial statements, tax returns, credit reports, debt schedules, accounts receivable records, collateral information, property valuations, and other supporting documents.
• Evaluate loan applications and determine the borrower's financial capacity and ability to repay.
• Analyze cash flow, liquidity, leverage, profitability, debt obligations, and other financial indicators.
• Assess collateral values and other sources of repayment to determine overall credit support.
• Research borrowers, guarantors, businesses, industries, and market conditions to identify potential lending risks.
• Prepare detailed underwriting reports with financial analysis, risk findings, and lending recommendations.
• Assign or recommend appropriate credit risk ratings based on financial performance and repayment strength.
• Underwrite commercial loan requests ranging from routine transactions to more complex credit structures.
• Ensure underwriting decisions comply with lending policies, regulatory requirements, and internal procedures.
• Monitor loan covenants and review borrower financial information for compliance with established requirements.
• Assist with periodic reviews of commercial accounts and higher-risk relationships.
• Support portfolio monitoring and other assigned credit management activities.
• Participate in credit quality reviews and help maintain accurate underwriting documentation.
• Work with Relationship Managers, Credit Officers, and other banking teams on loan structure and credit recommendations.
• Provide guidance and support to junior analysts and underwriting staff when needed.

• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a team.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to learn and effectively use credit, financial analysis, and banking software.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, Economics, or a related field is required.
• Seven to nine years of banking experience or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
• Four to six years of experience in commercial credit, underwriting, lending, or a related field.
• Experience with financial spreading and credit analysis software is required.
• Commercial banking or commercial lending experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

• Frequent use of hands and fingers when operating a computer keyboard and mouse.
• Occasional lifting or carrying of items weighing up to 10 pounds.
• Frequent sitting during computer-based work.
• Work is performed in a standard office environment with moderate noise levels.
• Regular working hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
• Reliable attendance and punctuality are required.
