Job Description:

A professional who assesses and evaluates commercial real estate loans is known as a Commercial Real Estate Underwriter. This role supports UMB relationship managers in evaluating and underwriting new SBCRE managed investment loans in accordance with established underwriting policies and standards.

How One Will Allocate Their Time:

• Collaborate with UMB relationship managers to perform credit underwriting activities for existing and prospective client relationships, including a wide range of credit-related responsibilities.
• Conduct comprehensive credit analyses to assess borrower and guarantor repayment capacity.
• Recommend appropriate loan structures aligned with risk and policy guidelines.
• Prepare and compile credit approval packages for presentation to the credit committee.
• Develop underwriting documentation by evaluating collateral across various asset classes and creating pricing and risk models tailored to each loan request.
• Submit loan requests to the UMB senior loan committee on behalf of relationship managers and respond to questions related to loan evaluation and approval.
• Review appraisals to ensure assumptions are consistent with underwriting analysis and comply with approval requirements.
• Provide ongoing customer support to current and prospective clients through joint sales calls with relationship managers or direct communication, consistently upholding UMB TUCE standards.
• Submit required documentation in a timely manner and resolve any related issues efficiently.
• Partner with loan operations, credit risk, regional business banking, specialized asset management, loan review, public finance, capital markets, and global banking teams to support loan structuring, closing, and ongoing portfolio management.
• Lead or contribute to various REG underwriting projects as availability permits.
• Support the development and guidance of junior REG underwriters and/or portfolio managers.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or a related field required
• Five or more years of experience in commercial banking, including credit analysis and underwriting
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Proven ability to manage loan renewals, restructures, maturity extensions, and changes to approval and underwriting structures
• Advanced knowledge of credit underwriting for core investment commercial real estate property types and a strong understanding of banking products, services, and operational processes
• Ability to interpret policies, loan agreements, credit reports, financial statements, and loan documentation
• Strong analytical skills, including evaluation of commercial real estate assets, markets, and guarantor financial statements
• Demonstrated initiative and willingness to share knowledge with less experienced colleagues
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and commercial lending software
